Spotlight Events at the 2012 Silk Screen Asian American Film Festival

Pittsburgh, PA – May 8, 2012Silk Screen: Asian Arts and Culture Organization will feature the following special events and community partnerships at its seventh annual Asian American Film Festival. The festival will kick off this weekend on Friday, May 11, and run until Sunday, May 20.
On Mother’s Day, Mothers get a free ticket
On Sunday, May 13, all mothers that come with a child (of any age) will receive a free ticket to a film. This applies at all three theaters: Regent Square Theater, Harris Theater and the Melwood Screening Room.
Family Friendly Films
The festival will include the following family friendly films ideal for children ages 8 –12.

Driven by his curiosity in other cultures and the mysteries of human nature, director Sander Francken delivers a captivating trilogy of folk tales. Each story is based on a folk song from a non-Western culture and shows that it is old wisdom which unites people.
“The Beetle Soldiers”

A powerful and uplifting tale for young and old alike, The Beetle Soldiers, captures a child’s struggle to follow his dreams amidst a world of adversity. The film follows the young Amek who struggles at school and is bullied for his cleft-lip, yet has big ambitions to one day race his horse.
“Dekh Indian Circus”

In this comedic satire, a group of young children in the rural desert of Rajasthan want nothing more than to visit the circus. But without a rupee to spare, the children must find a way to get to the circus on their own. Their aspirations and heartbreaks provide a metaphor for the corruption in India’s government and economy.

A Delhi businessman travels with his daughter to his childhood home in Ahmedabad to show her India’s largest kite festival. The return forces him to confront his past and mend broken relationships. Through a kaleidoscope of color, music and food, Patang is a story of renewal that captures the vibrant spirit of India.
Special Guest Q&A
Manu Narayan, star actor of the film “Good Night, Good Morning,” will host a Q&A session immediately following each screening of the film. The film will screen on Sunday, May 13 at the Harris Theater at 3:00 PM and Wednesday, May 16 at the Regent Square Theater at 7:00 PM.
The Pittsburgh-born actor, singer and musician, has acted in films such as “The Love Guru” and television shows such as “The Sopranos” and “Law and Order: SVU.”
